Plot summary

Jodhaa Akbar is set in the 16th century India, during the reign of Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar (Hrithik Roshan), one of the greatest emperors of the Mughal Empire. He is a young and ambitious ruler who wants to expand his territory and unify the diverse religions and cultures under his rule. He is also a ruthless warrior who does not hesitate to kill his enemies or show mercy to his allies.

Jodhaa (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) is the daughter of Raja Bharmal (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), the king of Amer (now Jaipur), a Rajput state that is loyal to the Mughals. She is a proud and spirited princess who values her religion and culture. She is also a skilled archer and swordswoman who can defend herself from any threat.

The film begins with Akbar's conquest of Gujarat, where he defeats his rival king Rana Pratap Singh (Rajesh Vivek). He then receives an offer from Raja Bharmal to marry his daughter Jodhaa as a gesture of peace and alliance. Akbar agrees to the proposal, despite being a Muslim and Jodhaa being a Hindu. He hopes that this marriage will help him win the hearts of his Hindu subjects and create harmony among his people.

Jodhaa, however, is not happy with this arrangement. She feels that she is being used as a pawn by her father and Akbar. She does not want to marry a foreigner who does not respect her faith or identity. She also fears that she will lose her freedom and dignity as a queen. She tries to resist the marriage by asking for impossible conditions, such as building a temple for her in the palace, but Akbar accepts them all.
