Illiciaceae (Illicium Family)
The genus name, Illicium, is Latin for “that which entices,” about the tree’s pleasant scent.
The species name, verum, is Latin for “true.” The Cantonese name baat gok translates as “eight corners,” about the fruit pod’s eight starry spikes.
•Flavor: sweet, pungent
Anise stars whole
Star anise is generally regarded as safe. Do not confuse star anise (Illicium verum) with I.religiusum or I. anisatum, both of which are potentially toxic and can cause kidney, urinary tract, and digestive tract inflammation.
